Periodontics: More Than Just Oral Healthcare
When bacteria accumulates on our teeth, it can develop into harmful plaque and tartar. Without proper brushing, flossing, and regular checkups, these substances can lead to infection and other serious health concerns.
Our office focuses on removing bacteria buildups from the gums, roots, and other soft tissues to prevent gum disease. We also can restore oral health if the condition has developed. Gum disease has two major forms that Dr. Redford can treat:
Gingivitis is a mild form of gum disease in which the gums become red, swollen, and irritated. This phase occurs most often because of poor oral hygiene. In addition, because of its mild nature, gingivitis commonly goes unnoticed. Regular dental check-ups can allow us to detect this issue in the earliest stages, and provide effective treatment to prevent it from developing further.
The next stage of gum disease is periodontitis. This stage occurs when bacteria builds up deeper below the gum line, destroying the soft tissue and bones that support the teeth.
While the most common cause of periodontitis is also lack of consistent oral hygiene, other factors can contribute to its development, including:
- Hormonal imbalances and medications
- Tobacco use
- Substance abuse
- Poor nutrition
- Autoimmune conditions such as HIV, AIDS, and leukemia
While a number of these factors are out of your control, we offer treatments that can significantly alleviate symptoms of periodontitis and restore your oral health.
At University Dental Arts, we strive to prevent gum disease. However, if the condition does develop, we offer conservative treatment, and avoid invasive solutions for the highest quality, gentle care. We perform a variety of non-surgical procedures that can be combined to provide effective, long-lasting results.
This procedure uses either dental instruments or an ultrasonic device to remove tartar and bacteria from tooth surfaces and from beneath the gum line. This treatment may be recommended for mild periodontitis.
This treatment targets the root as well as the tooth itself. Once the portion of the tooth above the gum line has been cleaned, we will gently dislodge the tartar and bacteria from the root. We will then smooth and polish the surface of the root. This action promotes periodontal regeneration and helps prevent future build-ups of bacteria and plaque. Collectively referred to as "deep cleaning", scaling and root planing are very effective methods in restoring overall oral health and preventing future issues.
Periodontitis can cause the areas between the teeth and gums to fill with bacteria and infect surrounding areas. These pockets can be unreachable with a deep clean. In this case, we may prescribe antibiotics. Antibiotics are available in oral or topical form, and are generally used for acute periodontitis. However, in extreme cases, scaling and root planing may be combined with antibiotics to eradicate all infection-causing bacteria.
At University Dental Arts, we firmly believe that preventative periodontal care is vital to not only restore oral health, but to also sustain a healthy life. To learn more, contact us today.
